As Kirsty says, it's much easier to go through these previous problems
than try and diagnose it yourself through the fault codes, bearing in
mind that yours is a 2000 model which are a pig to translate.

Also I seam to remember that plugging something into the cigarette socket too powerfull can cause a flashing glow plug light?

Speedo and odometer are part of the same unit so if one works and other doesnt the problem is internal to the speedo head unit, I have saw this a couple of times on Lucidas, and when I pulled the speedo head out found in one instance a fried chip on the circuit board in the speedo head and the other the reset button connected to a little arm which zero'd the trip which had somehow jumped further than it should have and so had jammed the trip.

2000 Models are fly by wire and cause a different set of problems there is a post here which is very similar to your problems. It seems like there are still on the flashing led method of reading fault codes which was Mazda's method right back to early 90's.

I would recomend checking over the EGR systems and vac pipes and making sure nothing is chaffed or loose cleaning all injection pump connectors. The feeding the pump from a can of clean diesel is useful as it rules out all of the fuel pipes filters tank etc if the symptoms persist.

I'm trying to work out why everything seamed fine until I had to swerve violently to avoid a collision. Then the glow plug light started flashing and I lost acceleration.

It does seem hard to understand that a hard swerve could cause you turbo to go but stranger things have happened in life I am sure.

The sediment causing problems is more feasible.

You need to get the codes read and cleared and read again until you get some current codes and work back from what they are telling you.

Have you tried some injector cleaner in it? Might help.

The origional fault code was 'wastegate'

The turbo has been replaced. The power has come back, but there is a long delay (about 3 sec) before it kicks in after
I depress the accelerater.

The Garage say that there is now no error code reading, even though the glow plug light is still flashing.

I have used some diesel redex in the fuel , but that doesn't seam to have made any difference.

Once codes have been cleared, they can take a while to reappear, so may be there when you return after the '100 miles' your garage mentioned. If they don't reappear, you're still looking for cures for the flashing glowplug light, no error code. Have you tried any of the ideas people have suggested (so we can rule them out).

I'm going to start working through them this weekend.

was the car sat for a period? the wastegate on the 99-2001 models is hugely over engineered and prone to seizure, does the light start flashing before you start the vehicle? (after you have reset the ecu?), or is it about 30 secs after? if so there is 1 test that you can try but I'm hesitant to suggest it as if you do, it has to be undone afterwards as if continually(weeks not seconds!) used it could cause damage, so let me know and we'll go from there,

I have no way of knowing whether the van was sat for before I purchased it, although since it has just come from japan It would seam safe to assume that it has been. it has not been sat still for any length of time since I purchsed it.

The first time the van is driven in the morning it takes 15 minutes for the light to start flashing,
each time I start it after that it is about 30sec.

When the ECU is reset it takes about 30 secs to come back on again.
I'm presuming the fault is not the Turbo since I have just had it replaced.

One thing I am wonding though is whether i should send the old turbo to be fixed, so i can sell it to recoup some of my losses...

I've taken the Odemeter apart and wiggled the reset button, the dials and checked all the connections and put it back together. It now seams to be working, so presume the reset button was jammed or there was a loose connection.

So I just need to sort out the flashing light now, I'm presuming its one of these:

1. scavenge fan sensor- £60 if you buy the sensor for the bongo but £16.95 if you get one for the MX-5 which is the same product code
2. water temperator sensor / coolant sensor- ?
3. egr vac pipes collapsing - ?
4. blown fuse - checked fuses, all seam ok.
5. fuse 1 bad connection - fixed loose foglight fuze, flashing stopped for 130 miles then reappeared
6. wastegate solenoid - tested, works ok
7. fuel filter - ?
8. Banjo filter (strainer) - fuel strainer missing

I think I've sorted it.
Just driven 30 miles without the light flashing.

It appears one of my fuses was loose...

well I'm presuming a loose fog light fuse cant be responsible for giving the 'wastegate' error code and that the Turbo needed changing anyway?

Presumably if I sold the turbo on ebay would I Have to describe it as faulty, and needing fixing?

or would the best bet to pay a turbo specialist to look at the turbo first, and possibly fix it before selling it?
