Don't want to confuse, but the 'U' ring seal is also known as a 'V' ring. They are commonly used on hydraulic rams/cylinders to withstand huge hydraulic pressures.

And to confuse even further, you can actually buy 'O' ring material in coils that you can cut to length, Superglue the ends together, and make them as big as you like. I did this as an apprentice when working on Vacuum furnaces - those were up to 10 feet in diameter. I kid you not.

Now you mention it, I have a cut-to-size 'O' ring kit at work. Even has a cutting guide so you get the ends square. Use it for fixing DVD players etc.
