Hi all thanks for all your help on this one. I bench tested the starter it span round ok, but after talking to an auto electrician mate of mine, he suggested it may be packing up under the cranking pressure. 30 mins later it was back in and working. So all that wiggling was a red herring....

Good to hear it's sorted! That red herring gets around...
