Diesel fuel in a petrol system can prove an expensive fix. Many peeps on here have done the "Ooopps . . . petrol

" faux pas but no-one has posted any ill effects.
In fact petrol in diesel system on a short term or very rare basis especially in extreme weather conditions is considered to be a plus as it stops the diesel glooping up in the cold.
Worry not. It'll be fine.

Wouldn't agree. Diesel fuel offers considerable lubrication and the engine is designed round that inherrent self-lubing. Fill a diesel with petrol and run it until it conks out and you'll have stripped the engine components of lubrication throughout. The fuels pumps of most diesels rely on the fuel itself to provide lubrication. Running petrol through can have a terrible toll on the pump resulting in metal on metal direct wear and production of wear debris that can block dowsntream components. It might not fail right away but it may well be walking wounded. Additives in petrol may also damage seals that were designed to contact diesel.
With some more modern diesels the pump can be damaged without even starting as the pump is powered and primed ready to go when ignition is switched on to give fast starting., even before the starte is engaged

There's a chance damage has been caused, by running it until it stops on basically 100% petrol in this case, but rather than assume the worst & replace everything, thinking positive, emptying, refilling with diesel & hoping for the best is the first, cheapest & easiest option, if other issues then show up, immediately, or further down the line, I'd deal with them once you reach that point. Just my opinion of course

I have had diesel vehicles since 1994 so haven't cocked up (yet!!!

) but I had a courtesy car once which was a little petrol Peugeot and I went to fill up chanting "petrol, petrol, petrol" to myself and I got it RIGHT!! I was so pleased that I had put the right fuel in it that I drove off without paying. I was so chuffed with myself that a couple of hours later, when the police phoned me up I still hadn't realised. Jolly chaps that they are here, the copper on the phone asked if I was blonde!! Had to go to Sainsburys and pay for the petrol and then to the police station to show them my receipt

I just KNOW I'm going to do that one day

You have to laugh
Hopefully the motor will be none the worse. Its happened to a few on here. You'd think the stations would come up with something to help prevent it as it seems a common mistake to make

In the States, filler caps in cars/vans are different sizes depending on the fuel required.
Shame to think they are more evolved than us in some respects.

They are here, you can't get a diesel nozzle in an unleaded filler.
I think new Focus diesels have a filler that won't take an unleaded nozzle.

You used to be able to get filler neck 'reducers' for some of the imports, for the old SVA.

Thankfully I have never put diesel in a petrol or vice versa yet either, but your non paying incident reminded me of the time when i was in a busy fourcourt, having just filled up, gone into the shop to pay...back out to the car...opened the drivers side door...jumped in to drive off.... and realised i was sitting in the back

Got out rather sheepishly, head down ... back into the car (front seat this time) and away.

I once went into a filling station to pay.. Woman says "What?"..
I say "I want to pay"..
"What for"...
"Petrol." ...
"You didn't take any..."
"What?"...
"You got out your car and came straight in here...you haven't put any in the car yet..."..
"Oh aye.. I'm tired..."
"Makes a nice yet odd change from folk trying to run away wihout paying..."

just fitted one of these little gizzmo's, they are normally £9.99 plus vat plus delivery, but they are on offer for £6.99 plus vat plus delivery, so for under £11 worth the money, plus its a pimp under the fuel cap.
you contact them by email and they send a phone number. here is their number, 01252749808.

(i have nothing to do with this company in any way other than recommending their product)

How about this for a pimp...
BUY THIS. Write 'DIESEL!' on your filler flap or cap. Give the other 4 pieces of chalk to your mates so they can do the same, to lots more vehicles.
P.S. If you have a petrol vehicle, write 'petrol' not 'diesel'...
