STEERING FLUID was my 'leak of the week'

Garage 1 diagnosed it. Treatment? - "A new steering rack, MATE"
Garage (Neighbour mechanic) "A leaking seal"

New seal £40 labour £20.

Money saved in fluid top ups..... . . . . . priceless.

The Bongo went into the trusty garage today to diagnose the oil leak as described......quite a lot of oil on the road over the past couple of weeks....turns out the oil and filter and oil change done 3 months ago by them was where the oil leak began...a faulty oil filter, easily repaired free of charge and all cleaned up now...the oil was gathering in the sump cover and soaking into the spongy material -designed to stop road noise, hence no drips straight away after the filter was fitted originally.
So it's all good and fixed for free!

Thanks people for the advice and I am a happy Bongalow owner again!

Glad it was a simple one, but I'd think about what garage you use in future.

Just caught this John. I know what you mean - hard to really defend one method against the other. It think - for me at least - it is because I associate gunk with brushing it on only where you want to degrease, then washing it off with water. In contrast, I see steam cleaning as a bit like pressure washing. Start using it over enthusiastically in the wrong places and it could seriously degrease places that like being left greased. It might also invade and upset modern electronic units. But I can't honestly say I know this as I have no real experience of either. I just have this vision of an overeager and inexperienced garage helper doing my car with a steam cleaner, getting carried away with its impressive cleaning power, and just overdoing it. Gunk doesn't hold the same attraction for the power crazy
