I too have an AVA side conversion and the fridge has stopped getting cold. When I turn the fridge on I can hear some sort of motor running, but no cooling takes place.
I also rang AVA and had a pretty curt reply from them, very much along the lines of your conversation with them. The bloke on the other end basically said I'd have to cough up £500 and he seemed to miraculously be able to diagnose the problem over the phone. A quick search of the BF forum led me to call the guy at Celtic Motorhomes. He was really useful, spent ages trying to talk me through the various problems that I may have with my fridge, he then suggested I contact the importer of the fridge.
My fridge is a 'Vitrifrigo' and the guy at http://www.penguinfrigo.co.uk/ (based in Southampton) was equally useful and friendly. He has basically suggested I try a couple of different things and if that does not work, I'll need to take the van down to him and he'll have look at it.
Both the Celtic Motorhomes guy and the Penguinfrigo guy were really useful and in stark contrast to the seemingly, far too busy guy at AVA.
I have yet to run the tests on my fridge. Have you had any luck with yours? Did you take it to the guy in Brighton?
