Why does a head crack?
Is it because there's a fault somewhere in the cooling system or is because that the design of the head is such that there is a finite amount of work it will do before it gives up the ghost?
I suppose the answer maybe 'both'?
I'm just thinking of my old VW T25 1.6 Td. The heads on them are good for 100K max - pretty much without exception. Probably for a number of reasons, but design reasons most of all I would have thought. Mine got to 103K then... goodnight!
On removal my water pump looked pretty ineffective, so it can't have helped matters much. Is yours ok draper?
Anyway, coolant issues aside, I was wondering if there is a similar point in a bongo's life where the head has just done too much and gives up the ghost?
Good luck with your project btw. I wouldn't have got past the beer and bbq bit!!

hmmm..
Well my gasket or head has gone due to a coolant leak.
But your right....I wonder if there was no coolant leak, never a broken water pump, no blockages, would a cylinder head go on for eternity?
such are the questions of life.....I guess the same applies to humans....if nothings wrong surely you'd go on for ever....
All be it pretty bitter and depressing to be around....
...spent the afternoon cleaning up the head....looks pretty smart....will look into pressure testing on Monday.
got some parts to identify that need replacing, new black pipes that have gone hard and cracked when removing....possibly fuel pipes...or vacuum pipes...
The there is another thing....not sure what it is, so will take a photo and ask the forum...four of them, one is broken....little black things, one with a red dot, another with a blue, one with yellow and one with black....sat on top of the manifold.??

Re: can't get the head off....
yeah you're right, it would be even worse if every chevette, cortina, cavalier, marina, allegro etc was still around too!!
I was thinking more along the lines though of peeps thinking "I love my bongo to bits but I know that at x miles I need to factor in having £1200 available (or whatever it might be), so I can enjoy another x miles of joyous bongoing"..... rather than it being an unexpected nightmare of a shock that causes folk to scrap / sell on cos they haven't got the cash to hand.
Just wondered if there was an 'x'.

Re: can't get the head off....
Hi
We have a spare cylinder head we bought from the club shop and after our mechanic gave up, it was Bell Hill to the rescue fitting a replacement engine. as the block was too wobbly.
Just a thought
