I would be tempted to have the spare the same WIDTH as the front tyres so as to avoid any steering imbalance - a difference in tyre width on the rear where the wheels are just "trailing" is (IMHO) less likely to unbalance the handling.

Good point, Scanner. I'd not thought about steering effort with using a rear on the front.

The difference between sizes front/rear is to introduce (AFAIK) some oversteer, the rolling diameter being virtually the same, front to back, on the standard tyres.

I would, however, say that if you suffer a puncture, you should always take care in your driving style when using a spare, if only because it's been hanging under the van for years, condition untested! Use it to get you home/ to the tyre shop!

Must say, there's a lot to be said for running the same size all round :D

So i guess i am committed to changing something about my set up.

Do i change the rears to match the 195/70 or change the front to match the 215/70 ?

is wider better?
are 195's up to the traction required?
does it have to be 215/65?, does the extra circumference do any good/bad?

and finally what tyres does everyone like? make model etc...

If you keep 195/70 on the front it should be 215/65 on the back to keep the diameters within spec.
But if the fronts are more worn than the rears you could change those to 215/70 to match the rears

As Franco says that will result in some gearing up which will slightly alter the accuracy of the speed/odometer (possibly helpful if yours over reads ATM) and could help economy and cruising by reducing revs at any given speed.

Hi Etienne and Katy one question as i've not seen it mentioned on this tread are you 2wd or 4wd because if you are only 2wd 215/70 15's will be ok on the back its just that your speedo will be slightly out as you will be travelling slighty faster.

Be fair - the significance of that isn't obvious to most people.

Sorry, didn't mean to be obtuse, the SGL3 is 2WD, the SGL 5 is 4WD.

If you are changing tyres, you would be better off changing the front ones
to 215/70 so same tyres all round with an identical spare. you can then swap
wheels anywhere you want. You may notice a very slight decrease in speedo
indication but you would not have to worry about the Viscous coupling.

I would guess that the majority of members run 215/65 tyres all round and
seem to think it makes no difference or improves the steering. A steel wheel
will do for the spare, cheap as chips if you can find one with a 215/70 tyre.

Sorry to drag this topic back to life, but.....

If i have a 4wd, with alloy

Front: 195 70 R15 92H
Rear: 215 65 R15 96H

Can I use a 195 70 15 steel?

I'm thinking the answer is "not on the rear, no"
Cheers

Yes you're OK to use the steel front or back, as far as size goes.
There's only 1% difference, see

OK so long as the load index is 96 or more my 195/70s were 97 so OK.
