He did give it a run I belive but the lack of power was not apparant till going uphill at about 40.
He probably just gave it a run to see it was running smooth and quite after the 2 jobs were done.

In all fairness, at low speeds and revs it was not really noticeable.

I had similar symptoms-struggling to get up hills and no power on kickdown and it turned out the air intake pipe had come off the airiitake manifold

Yep,
the road test is usually the bit that the Mechanic likes. :)
