But actually, I find myself thinking it is arguably more accurate to call them FDBs. They are patently no use against bulls or kangaroos (not are these a risk in Japan). However, in Japan, traffic congestion is a major issue. And we know the Japanese had trouble judging the front corners of their Bongos and thus fitted parking sticks. Plus of course the Bongo was (I suspect) their 'get out of the crowded city and find space and peace' mobile. And for those that did, some extra night time illumination down dark roads was a good idea. So they offered a front bar that protected the fender, made best use of the top bar as well as reducing danger to pedestrians by being padded (great for admiring the view on a scenic journey stop), and provided a mounting point for spotlights.

So lets have no more of this bullbar stuff young lady.

Hi
Tis true, Mike.....I can't remember when (the old forgettory works too well), but around 2005, I think, I posted on just that matter, and, yes, they were classified as "frontal protection system" for the upcoming European regulations for 2006 (January), which categorically stated that they were NOT classified as "Bullbars" if they closely followed the contours of the car with a gap of around 2 inches (or something like that), and the diameter of the tubing not less than 2 inches, also they should not extend past the side of the vehicle. I read the whole diatribe, and the classification was very definite, with the Bongo bars neatly fitting in . I believe that some silly T**t on a mission must have done some homework and decided that ANYTHING was a bullbar, and susequently had the law changed to what it is now. There was a woman heading up this witch-hunt , who's child was killed running out in front of a car with bullbars attached, and she made it her life's mission to grab so-called expert opinion to say that it was the bar that caused the problem.....Not B****Y likely....kid+road+moving vehicle = dead kid....sorry, but it is the mother trying to apportion blame elsewhere.....if she kept an eye on the brat, it wouldn't have happened. I feel extra-ordinarily strongly about this, as it also happened tom my aunt....the postman left the gate open and her son ran into the road and was killed instantly....did she head up a campaign to ban postmen?...NO...My cousin was killed by a truck squashing him against a bollard on his bicycle....in the 50's we just grieved, and didn't try to get off the hook by blaming someone or something else.....Perhaps the stupid cow behind the campaign should ban trucks, as they can sure mess-up a kid.
A large number of us have kids, and they are still alive as we looked after them, and taught them not to wander in the road as if they own it...I also LOCKED my front gate just in case mine took it into their heads to wander....its called parenting now, but in my day it was LOGIC.....why should anyone else have to be concerned about someone else's kids because the owners (THEY SURE AIN'T PARENTS) lack mental agility
There's only one way to stop a lot of accidents happening, and that is to make prospective parents apply for a licence to breed, and if they don't pass a few tests, then hard luck!!!....imagine, if you can, being brought up by dozy parents , anyway....it doesn't bear thinking about!!!
So...To sum up...I'm with you all the way, Mike....WEAR YOUR FRONTAL PROTECTION SYSTEM WITH PRIDE!!!!!!
KLONK KLONK (That's fatty -me- getting down off her soap-box)
Cheers
