Warning

If you go down the route of warming up the engine before doing this be very careful when taking off the filler cap

good point, i forget its not always obvious to everyone to slowly release the cap off the expansion tank.

Are you sure all these alternative methods for getting the anti freeze in are not more hassle than just draining out, refilling properly and rebleeding?

easily done in ten to fifteen mins for the method i described,
how long to drain ,fill and bleed properly and then bleed and then bleed.

Think you have a good point there "sprout" see my first reply !!
DBO... Iv'e never had to rebleed or top up after a refill/bleed. At least you will know it's all in there and properly mixed...swings/roundabouts I suppose....each to his own....!!

Agree, Haydn swings and roundabouts, pros and cons for both methods, i suppose it depends on how confident you are to drain and bleed the system.
The way i described works and is fairly idiot proof (which is perfect for me #-o ).
Ive had my coolant completely changed twice and radiator flushed as well (both set's of silicon hoses) and both times no problem with air being trapped, but always had to top up the next day.

The method we employed as used on KK's bongo ENSURES that an airlock is avoided in the first place, as it follows the principles of "the hosepipe method".

For the uninitiated, the H/P method reduces the chances of airlocks by purging the air as the coolant is added in the first place.

This is the safest way to strengthen the coolant in my opinion, as neat antifreeze is being replaced by the exiting water simultaneously.

Nah mean?

Now, how about extending this debate. If we are gong to do that, then is there any reason why you couldn't do an effective coolant change using the same method? I'm getting tempted.

Whose 'KK' by the way. He lives right next to 'MM' on the keyboard but it could be coincidence [Edited - Nope its KK for Kawasaki Kid - doh!]

Talking of which (says he wandering off thread again), Clive James on BBC R4 today at 08:45 (try listen again) gave a hoot of a talk for those of us getting clumsy on the keyboard, keeping pens that don't work in old coffee mugs etc.

Last night I emailed my mate Daymo to tell him I'd just taken my son Will's mates back after the birthday party to their homes in Knutsford. I'm always mistyping that word to spell something rude. Last night (woops) I did it again. This time I just left it be

Coolant change using that method is basically the "Hosepipe method" Mike  KK - Kawasaki Kid :D

Other way round you mean Ste? Exiting water is being replaced by the neat coolant
