I guess with a vehicle like the Bongo, where you change the oil every 3-5k miles, a pump is going to be perfectly fine for the job. I'd have thought that with such regular additions of clean oil, any residual deposits lying around inside would soon be shifted!

Since the pump makes it such an easy job, perhaps peeps would like to consider using a flushing oil as well, every now and then? Suck out the old oil (or as much of it as you have of the flushing oil - usually 4-5 litres), add the flushing, idle for 10 minutes, and then suck it all out, along with changing the filter. It certainly made my old petrol 'Pinto' engine sparkling clean inside.

Nibs wrote:8) :) :D  Yes I have removed the sump plug after using my Pela Pump, to change the washer and can confirm that not one drop of oil came out. Best thirty quid i've spent
Cheers Nibs
Excellent. I been starting to wonder if I ought to remove it next time just to reassure myself. Saved me the bother! At the end of the day owners of the earlier Smart cars had to have one of these as they weren't fitted with a sump plug (mine came 2nd hand from a Smart car owner, courtesy of a BF member called smartmonkey, now long gone from here but he was an excellent guro on things mechanical, sorely missed). I saw Pela pumps for sale on ebay the other day, priced at £32 plus postage. Provided you are happy with this way of changing you oil, it really makes the job a pleasure. 8)

I use a hand pump, just like this one..... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hand-Operated-Oil ... 240%3A1318

Worked fine for me, I also remove the sump plug after, and only a little amount of oil came out. It's a lot cleaner method, especially when it's windy.

I replaced the the sump plug with a magnetic one, It's a bit of a fiddle getting it back in as the magnetic tip wants to stick to the sump. (I remove, and refit the sump plug with the bongo on the ground and by reaching under) on the last oil change There was no sign of any metal filings on the plug.

As for changing the oil every 3-5 k miles, I leave it for a bit longer, as it's been said that due to the higher quality of oil these days,( I use magnetec) compared to 13+ years ago, it lasts longer, and protects more.

Like I posted the other day - I stick a magnet onto the oil filter - when the filter is changed any metal is chucked out with it and I fit the magnet to the new filter :D

I used that method as well but the magnet was not fixed well enough, and seems to have disappeared. #-o

I used magnets from a scrap microwave... by stripping down the magnetron.
