Me again.
Well, it was a seized fan that caused the problem.
Stripped it to it's component parts and found that the bottom fan bearing was swimming in a rusty sludge.
Also one of the brush springs was jammed in (they are steel, one rusted solid)
So, stripped the motor down, cleaned all the rust and cr*p from the bottom bearing housing and drilled a small hole to allow any future water to escape.
Freed the sintered metal bearing from the shaft, soaked it in WD40 then engine oil.
Re-lubed it all and re-assembled it (having use the magic WD40 to free the rusted spring).
Checked the resistor pack, sure enough, the connection taking the live feed to the resistors has melted it's connection.
Re-soldered it, put it all back together and now have a fully functioning fan system again.
Fitted new glow plugs, as staring became a problem (two burned out but replaced all 4).
Also had an intermittent fault with the window switch not working when the door was open.
Stripped the loom from the body to the door and found 1 broken wire, 4 wires at the point of breaking.
The plastic covering on the wires has gone brittle, so I had to bridge the faulty ones with wire links soldered in.
I'll remake the door loom when the weather gets warmer.
Brownie points to me today =D> , back to painting the doors in the house tomorrow
I have earned my bottle of wine on Friday evening

it makes you wonder how much all that would cost if you had taken it to a garage, glad you fixed your problems . =D>

Good for you rwill =D> =D> That sounds like a lot of work you've done. The mechanic said he would strip it all out tomorrow. I will mention the drain hole, which I saw also on another thread. Great idea to keep all the wet and muck out. Thank you for getting back to me. I am all read up now on how to fix it. I bought another resister, but decided to hang on to the old one and see if I can get it soldered for spare. Hope the rest of your jobs go well :)

Cheers Anna

Sure does.
Now, if I can just get this second hand nuclear power plant that I salvaged from a Russian submarine working I will be ready for winter.

What was that bang?

Forget the reactor and celebrate with a case of cold beer. The emissions will be a lot less dangerous

Hi Guys,
Just want to say a big thankyou for all your help and advice =D> . The problem was the bearings were jamming the fan, because of muck build up. The Mechanic( A great guy) cleaned everything and oiled accordingly. didn't need a hole in base, as there was one there already with a little drainage tube. He changed the resistor and while here also changed my fuel filter. So all done now =D> So I have the rust spot to tackle( I have all the stuff)before putting on my new Spats. Then it's bling time- Chrome mirrors, grille, etc.
Then knowing my luck the Engine will blow up
Do you know what- I don't care, cause Ill fix it(have it fixed) 8) :D

Cheers Anna

Great news Anna. And just in time cos there's no way you want to be without a working fan/blower in the misty old winter months as Bongo screens are prone to misting up and need all the help they can get. Don't forget switching the aircon on a very effective for de-misting when cold rain tries to overcome the fan blower even on full setting and misting occurs. I'm thinking I might try some Rain-X de-misting cleaner to help things too.

Hi Mike,
Thanks- Yes all done and now have heater :D :D :D Such luxury when you have been without for a few days Eh?
It was the misting that was causing the main hassle.
I think we too will try this Anti rain stuff. Sounds good!

Cheers Anna

A good point about the Bongo is even without a heater fan, the engine lump between the seats warms up on a decent run and provides heat. But of course that won't help the windscreen demist, so of limited use as you have to drive with the windows open and pray !!!

My number 3 setting is'nt working at all, settings 1, 2, and 4 are ok, does this sounds like a resistor fault?

Hi,Brorabongo,
Hubby says that ours started like that- 1st 1 didn't work 2nd didn't work then 3rd didn't work. It probably is the resistor, but it is what is causing the resistor to blow, that needs checking- ie: Fan sticking in water or muck, bearing etc.
Hope I got it right, I'm just learning about techni things- Guys will be along soon.

Cheers Anna
