Just got back from a night out in the Bongo and am happy to report that the fault is well and truly cured 
The total cost for labour was £136 and the parts £141, so a grand total of £277 of which the seller has agreed to pay half.
Big thanks to Ian and the rest of the bongo fury members for the help and advice, JPAT for the cheap bits and my beloved local garage TN Motors in Wadebridge who as always came up trumps
Will search for the coolant alarm stuff now!
Oh, and the garage did remember to take some snaps, so i'll post them up tomorrow in here.
