Fair point..............don't have an answer to it.Aethelric wrote:I'm now showing my very extensive ignorance of auto gearboxes. But, after doing all these checks with engine running etc. is it not possible to "recalibrate" the dipstick to take a measurement cold and in P with the engine off? I'm sure this won't work as its too obvious, but why? What's happening in there?

I think it is also to make sure that all the valves and chambers that have to be full of oil for it to work are full and the gearbox is in running condition.dandywarhol wrote:Fair point..............don't have an answer to it.Aethelric wrote:I'm now showing my very extensive ignorance of auto gearboxes. The level is checked with the engine running because the torque convertor takes some of the oil from the gearbox sump - the reason for using "D" is to eliminate splash on the dipstick that can happen when idling at higher revs in "P", which can givw a false reading.
Yep, thats exactly what the auto gearbox fella said...manufacturers would rather have owners read the level wrong, than chance a runaway vehicle, with a claim on the manufacturer for badly worded instructions in the manual.dandywarhol wrote: Manufacturers probably don't recommend checking in "D" incase someones vehicle sets off by itself
Thats how I read it tooscanner wrote:If that is the case then there is no reason not to get a shorter dipstick and check the level cold.
