The air inlet is under the bonnet, so I don't think the engine shield would help much.

But the airbox is in the engine bay,i know its relatively shielded in there, but i wouldn't fancy pouring a bucket of water onto it whilst the engine is running.

It's completely sealed, if it wasn't it wouldn't work properly.
Put the palm of your hand over the air intake under the bonnet while the engine is running and you'll see what I mean.
