I'd go for the power steering pump too.
Mine does it if the engine is warm but standing for 15+ minutes - the first 5 seconds there's a rattle which ceases when I turn the steering wheel slightly - bugged the tits off me as I was convinced it was a tappet for a long time.
Next time it does it, turn the steering slightly to "load" up the pump - i reckon it's the relief valve chattering - nothing drastic to worry about if it is............

It was the crankshaft pully it had come apart where ther is a rubber piece holding the 2 halves of the pully together. Not too expensive about £100 including all new belts. I think. BUT has anybody got a spare crankshaft pulley as Bongo Bits don't hold them in stock and I have been told it could take three weeks to get one over from Japan. Help please!!!!!

Which garage do you use, out of interest. My engine has become very noisy, needs a service at least, and I'm wondering whether to use my usual (very good) garage or a specialist.

Good to get a result aitch - get it fixed pronto - Fords have been known to break crankshafts when the pulley/damper fails

I shall do as quick as I can get a new pulley as they seem to be hard to find - bongobits had three spare engines last week but have sold them all so I may just have to wait for one from japan, hope that the garage can lend me a car for the next three weeks!!!

Aitch - BUZZBOY mentioned on his 'BONGO TROUBLE' thread that he is having to get a new engine. Maybe PM him on the off chance? See

Can't believe it has to take 3 weeks to get a pulley from Japan. I wonder if bj4 might do an express commission job and/or if he has connections to do that. I read on here of someone getting a body part (sorry - panel ) flown in from Japan in 3 days. It must be possible.

Good luck - keep us posted. Always seems a funny item to fail, but I guess that cos I'm thinking of old Brit cars where everything was cast iron

Phil at JAL often has the odd Bongo for breaking.

thanks for all the replies, I located one through findapart.com on thursday was supposed to be delivered yesterday - It didn't turn up they are sending another one today ( saturday) which I should get on monday - I shall wait and see and let you all know!!!! not the best of service so far

New (second hand )pulley finally arrived on Tuesday afternoon and as I was at work for a 24 hour shift finally got her back yesterday. £97 for the pulley a new one would have been over £140 plus £52 labour for fitting it. I am So happy to be back on the road again (as the old song goes)

I would like to thank all those people who gave me ideas and advice for the original question and a word of warning to all these pulleys can get problems with the rubber damper coming apart with age so it might be worth checking yours now and again for signs of wear.

Is the engine any smoother aitch?

yes it does seem to be running smoother and much better than before BUT they told me the number 1 exhaust stud has started to "burnout" and will need replacing at some time they have quoted over £300 to do this which seems a little on the dear side so will have to have a think about this and read the threads carefully to see if I can do this myself!!!

any ideas anyone????
