Splines are used to compensate for the lengthening and shortening of the propshaft i.e.when the suspension compresses or extends the propshaft changes length as the axles move independantly of the gearbox/transferbox which is mounted solidly. If there were no splines there would be no drive transmitted as the inner would spin around the outer. The universal joint enables the shaft to turn when angled in either the horizontal or vertical planes. If the shaft was solidly mounted then the axles (suspension) wouldn't move and pretty comprehensive damage would occur instaneously.

The spline section is packed in grease when new. Some vehicles have a grease nipple in the tube but I suppose the Bongo has it packed (?) for life............or not as in Harry's case :(
