Air filter and throttle adjustment sorted.
Given the maturity of the 'staining' below the fuel pump my garage recons it been leaking quietly for a while.
Starting was a problem too with insufficient 'oomph' to turn the starter motor a full whizz or to operate the heater plugs properly with only two out of the four actually doing their job.
Bought new battery yesterday (£79-50p)...old one knacked after all the recent abuse...but it was on its way out anyway as all those members who have given me a jump start at almost every bongo meet last year will testify.
Engine starts first time now and all heater plugs are working!
New high pitched whine continues at high revs with engine under load...but only when engine fully warmed up...still suspect manifold stud but havn't got time to get it into garage for further investigation yet (It's a working vehicle doing at leastv350miles (500km) per week and starting each trip loaded with around half a ton of birdseed).
If you remember the saga of the rattling keys....well its back but only when driving uphill...and there is a lot of those in the Lakes. Torch out and grovel session tomorrow.
Incidentally if you see a silver bongolow broken down between the Lakes and North Wales/Shropshire border from next Sunday to Wednesday it will be my missus who is borrowing the van for a few days to visit family.
