I have noticed it the past couple of months but I have been using veg oil for a couple of months so maybe it was there before and I just didn't notice the smell.

Thinking about it I have noticed the chip smell when I open the front window when in traffic.Always make me smile thinking of the other drivers wondering what the smell is

Did'nt some folk get the smell of diesel etc, due to a leaking fuel pump?

Why am I the only one worrying about carbon monoxide here

If the cause of the fumes is determined, then consequently the monoxide issue should be theoretically rectified also...
As an afterthought, does the bongo have one of those flaps to stop the cabin pressurising? Could that be close to an exhaust leak?
But that doesn't explain the lack of fumes when the heater is switched to recirculate.... Hmm, its a tricky one is this...
I suspect a manifold leak.... But without the screech?

I haven't investigated too much but I am now very curious.I will let the van idle on the drive and see if the inside fills with the chip smell.I can't say that I have noticed it all the time.

You're right to be concerned Trev but the carbon monoxide in diesel exhaust is minute compared to a petrol engine. That's one reason the Nazi's didn't use diesel trucks at Auschwitz

Gillybump? I dont suppose you have an Eberspacher night heater fitted that could be leaking diesel? If so, where is the exhaust routed/mounted?

Trev is absolutely right to be concerned about CO poisoning. I had a contractor working for me a few years ago who had complained about headaches etc when driving his car. He failed to turn up for work one morning and we later got a call from the police. He had been overcome by fumes on the motorway and somehow managed to get over to the hard shoulder before collapsing over the wheel. It turns out he had a fuel leak which was dropping onto the hot exhaust and the fumes were getting into the cab. He recovered but it could have been very nasty. As Dandy says, diesel isn't as bad as the fumes from petrol but dangerous just the same. I suggest you find the cause and not simply put up with it.

Took the bongo to work this morning and in the traffic with the heater on I did get a chip smell.
I called in at the bongo garage and have booked the bongo in for friday.
However on the way home I parked outside a shop for 10 mins with the heater on and no smell.
I am beginning to wonder if it is just which way the wind is blowing.
I lifted the bonnet and had a good smell with the van running and couldn't smell anything yet sometimes I can smell chips just climbing out of the van.
Where exactly does the heater pick up from? Is it the scoop that sits just above the radiator?
Cheers
Darren

Yes, a long narrow scoop, just to the left and down abit is the air intake for the engine.

I don't understand how that could pick up fumes from the manifold as it is right at the front grill. I can only assume that the wind must blow the exhaust fumes round to the front.
Doesn't anybody else smell their veg oil sometimes??

Only when stationary, with window open, and wind in right direction.

I get the same thing when the vehicle is at lights. Even more when reversing into the drive
