Think of the torque convertor as a slightly slipping clutch (it's fluid driven).
When the fluid is warm enough a mechanical device "locks" the convertor so it no longer slips, this gives the impression of another (5th) gear.

Interesting that since I fitted a K + N air filter I can drive up inclines still in lockup - it used to downshift on the same hill leaving Edinburgh on the A702 :? I guess the engine is breathing better and producing a wee bit more torque at 1700 rpm...................

Thanks for your posting Big L.
I too have the same problem, not changing into fourth when cold.
I have been checking levels etc, and was about to change gearbox oil.
Not too worried now, and will change oil in February when service and MOT is due.

Regards

But it should change into 4th when cold - it just won't lockup the convertor, (giving the impression of 5th) until warm.

May be you are missing IE not noticing the changes
remember the first change is going into second it will
be in 4th by 30mph lock up happens at about 37mph
but only once it's warm on ours about 1 1/5 miles,
sometimes I can only tell it's changed by the rev counter
other times it's more noticeable.

I get a slight delay changing up to 4th which varies depending on temperature. It was about 6 degrees this morning with a raw force 6 blasting up the loch & it took maybe an extra 0.5km to change into 4th. I've a bit of a twisting hill to climb at the beginning of the journey & usually get 4th just as I ease of the throttle at the top of the hill (about 1km covered). She goes into lockup pretty much spot on 5km normally.

Just been out and from stone cold with a light throttle it changes
1st to 2nd at about 5 mph
2nd to 3rd at about 15 mph
3rd to 4th at about 25 mph
lock up is at about 37 mph
it goes up to 4th right from cold but wont lock up till it's done about
a mile and a half I don't really notice the delayed lockup as I have
to drive about 2 miles to get out of the 30 limit.
The speedo is about right with the GPS and the more stick you give it
the higher the change up speeds.

........another tip to check you've got to 4th is to drive along on the flat around 25/30 mph and press the HOLD button - the revs should increase as it engages 3rd.
