I'm a pauper with just a gear position display next to my shifter... :(
Mine is early 98 "R" reg and it has neither gear display nor, so far as I can tell, low fuel warning.

One can tell if there isn't a low fuel warning light - usually by coasting to a halt unexpectedly!

Seriously, if a low-fuel warning indicator is fitted one can just about see it briefly in the dash display when the ignition is switched on and all the other warning lights come on. Best done at night without sidelights on.

Perhaps it is a grade option. Mine has an automatic air conditioner. Does the none fuel warning light jobbie have a manual air conditioner?

No connection between the two.

The digital aircon isn't age specific, although it was more popular in later models, and the extra, dashboard gear selector, and low fuel warning light started to appear at late 97 onwards... Generally speaking, if your bongo is new enough to have the passenger airbag, then its new enough to have the dash lights.

You know how it is with the spec of bongo's...there is no set rules, you get, what ya get....

Sorry cheffy. Aaprt from the usual connection checks i can offer no practical advice mate...

Its not a big job removing the instrument cluster though bud, the steering wheel doesn't even have to be removed, just a few screws, and careful as ya go!

I'll bet you a new pair of socks, that the connection at the warning light end is either dirty, come loose, or badly earthed...

  Size 12's...and yes second hand will do nicely...i'll just turn em inside out

It does seem a shame to take the cluster to bits without discreetly slipping some white dials in whilst your at it....
