Bongo Fury

PLEASE DON'T USE BRICKS!! If jacking up a vehicle and you haven't got the correct stands don't use bricks, as they can and have been, lethal. If working under a vehicle and cannot get the right height on an axle stand consider stacked sections of railway sleeper, they absorb sharp edges instead of cracking like a brick can, and spread the load. But there is no compromise on safety, flattened by a Bongo on your chest is no way to die(t). Shakey.

Wise words, Shakey, but i have it covered now, engine jack, 2 axle stands, 2 trolley jacks, and mates going to bring his mini digger

I feel a bit sheepish now. I wrote longer cautionary note to Wayne but thought I was being wimpish and sticking my nose in so didnt send it. Bricks (crumbling of) was on my mind amongst other things (like sloping driveway - be careful. I should think you MIGHT be OK with Accrington bricks, but something not friable is much safer. Anyway, sounds like Wayne is ahead of the game. Good luck

TFFT Wayne, I always find if short of muscle, use a tractor, I haven't any mates posh enough to own a mini digger!! Shakey

Good safety points about the bricks guys........I feel I should add that I didn't just use single bricks piled up on each other like you do when you nick wheels! I actually built brick piers 400mm square topped with a paving slab and a bit of plywood. I was totally confident of the integrity of the completed structure! It looked very strange though.

I fully agree that you shouldn't use bricks though!

It's just that you have to lift the van so high, much more than axle stands and trolley jacks will allow............however waycar, I didn't realise that you weren't refitting an engine........you may have a problem lifting the van with an engine crane....HSS cranes only lift up to 500kg and won't lift the van much (been there done that!)

A mini digger should be good though to lift the whole van up. My new engine came from a write-off and we tilted the van over by about 45 degrees to slide the engine out.

PS: To the read and believe brigade: I don't really nick wheels

1. Get front up on ramps.

2. Jack up passenger side as far as poss.

3. Chock, put blocks on jack.

4 Repeat 3.

6. Using a pair of trolleyjacks, 4 people - including at least one the size of an ox, the whole lump can be carefully rolled out resulting in applause & cheers

i was sure there was an easier way to take the alternator off for pete, but hey thats what you get when you ask a guy for advice who asks if he can play with the bongo with his digger when ive done
