Misfire Again.

Forgive me if I'm banging on about my misfire again, but I didn't get any further with it, and the original post went off on a tangent.

I'll explain the sequence of events.

1. Turn the Key, the glow plug warning lights up.
2. The light goes out and I start the engine. It starts first time every time without delay.
3. After about 10 seconds I hear a click and the glow plugs switch off, then bongo starts to misfire and throw out loads of smoke.

As far as I'm aware, the glow plugs switch off after 10-15 seconds only if the engine is not running. If it is running then they stay on until the correct tempature is reached.

Does anyone have any ideas why mine could be switching off so early.
It gets very embarasing on a campsite when you fill next doors tent with smoke.

I have fitted a glowplug relay switch with a indicator light.
When your Orange glowplug light goes out it is true that the plugs keep glowing. However they do not stay on constantly as you seem to think. They switch on/off,on/off untill the running temp is reached. They can switch on/off many times before finally staying off. This accounts for the short lifespan of Bongo plugs. Thats why I fitted a relay switchoff "switch".

I've fitted the relay switch and the glowplugs stay on for ages at tickover, only going off when the engine is revved. If I switch the plugs off, I get exactly the symptoms you describe. It sounds as if either your relay may be faulty, or whatever causes it to switch on and off. But I'm no expert on these relays and hope you get a reply from someone who does.

Hi B&T, Have you tried holding your bongo at a fast idle,1500RPM say, just as you think the poor running is about to start? just for 10 or 15 seconds or so? Then allowing the engine to settle to its own tickover speed... around 1100RPM if cold.
