Looking at getting a bongo

Post by StrandedTurtle » Fri Apr 24, 2026 7:54 am

Hi,

I'm 22 and have been looking at selling my car and getting a bongo. I have a very short commute to work, 12 mins and can cycle over the summer, I also would have use of another car even if I sell mine. Hence why I'm thinking of making my main vehicle a bongo.

In shopping around in the used market in the UK and am finding some options in the 6K to 7K mark.

Is this an ok price for a fully decked out bongo?

What do you y'all think of the idea in general?

I'm a climber so I want the bongo for weekend trips

Can I suggest you look at insurance costs, many younger drivers get a nasty surprise when they go to ensure!!!
Typical well used converted vehicles will indeed be in the range you suggest, however they will also be carrying a lot of rust, not visible to the eye, from a simple exterior look :-( You really need to get the vehicle checked out from underneath by someone who is experienced in these matters as with underside coatings any rust is easily hidden!! However if you can find a good vehicle they do really provided an excellent camping vehicle, best used on a regular basis rather than left to gather moisture and rust, many of us use the vehicle on a daily basis but yest very short journeys won't be helpful ;-)

Thanks for the tips, my younger brother is a "car guy" and I'll be getting him to check out any signs of rust to be safe. I did also do an insurance check on one and I was pleasantly surprised to be honest, better than I was expecting at my age but do have 4 years of NCD even of I'm not 25 yet!

There's a 'Buying a Bongo' Fact Sheet in the Members' Area, we'll worth a look.

Welcome aboard..
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Assuming you have joined the club itself, not just the bulletin board, then at the top of the page is a "Join Bongo" button, click this, then click "Members Area", scroll down to "Factsheets" and scan the list for the required item.
