Help: 2.5TD Thermostat orientation

Post by udhi » Thu Mar 12, 2026 11:36 am

Hi all,
I would really appreciate some advice. I am having a crisis of confidence!

Yesterday, I found the thermostat in the 2.5TD 4x4 Bongo, completely de-cored before our ownership.

I have a new thermostat waiting to go in, but for the life of me, I do not know how it should be oriented on install - coil spring DOWN or UP, when you look at the housing from above? I don't want to damage anything by experimenting with its position.

I hope this pic makes sense. I would describe this as spring down.

The conical section faces downwards and the flat plate at the top seals off the top inlet pipe coming direct from the engine. Spring up in your description rather than downwards, it also has a notch in the mounting plate for alignemnt.

Just had a quick look at a drawing in my manual
Looks like the spring goes into the housing on the engine or an upward direction as you are looking at it.

Hard to describe but hope that makes sense

you can sort of see it on here but its not a great drawing

Brillaint! Thank You, both. I was going to install it the opposite way.

I had a look at some Ford Ranger thermostat changes and they coincide with what you describe
