Alternator Failed

Post by Ian » Fri Oct 20, 2023 8:03 am

Asking on behalf of John from Leeds who has a diesel Bongo. His alternator has failed completely and a garage 1 mile away have said they will install a new one. But is it safe (or even possible) to fire up the Bongo and drive the 1 mile to the garage?

With even my limited mechanical knowledge I know that the alternator feeds the belts which drive the waterpump which circulates the coolant. So is it worth the risk?

On the diesel, the belt that drives the water pump is the same one as the alternator, so there will be no coolant flow! Not a good idea....

Geoff is correct, but if it’s only failed to provide charge, and the belts are intact, I recon it should be ok.

Good point Bob, was thinking belts had gone but may just be the alternator itself.
