Help with price????

Hi all

I'm looking for help please, me an Ethernet family are moving to Denmark in January and want to take our beloved bongo with us. But this mean having to register it and pay tax on it in Denmark to do this we need to provide a as new price and a current price. We're okay at estimating the current price but the original as new price we have not got a clue???? If anyone can offer any guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

Difficult one this. According to the club's record a 1996 2WD AFT diesel Bongo cost around 2.5 million yen AT THE TIME OF PRODUCTION. At today's exchange rate this is around £17,500, but back in 1997 it worth around £13,000. You will then have to find out the corresponding conversion rates for the Danish Krone.

Sounds remarkably good value compared to 'that other brand'. What a shame they never had a go at the European market. Although from the number of Bongos i'm still seeing on uk roads, many of those made have found their way here regardless, some years later.

I don't know why I had £37,000 from new in my head then ? I thought they were close to £40K new. That is that illusion shattered.

Looking at the two very different answers posted above, I'm wondering if the discrepancy comes from not using the correct exchange rate at the time.

The current exchange rate today is about 160 Yen to the Pound, but in 1996, from what I've found online, it was close to 80 Yen to the Pound.

Therefore in today's money 2.5m Yen would be about £15,500, whereas in 1996 more like £32,500.

Any thoughts?

That has a plausible feel to me. I don't think Friendees would have been a bargain had they been 'made for UK market' when they were produced. They'd have traded off the Mazda quality band reputation and probably gone for predator pricing against the main alternatives. I'm not sure either whether they would have looked at marketing unconverted Bongos (although things like Nissan Serena, Toyota Previa, Ford Galaxy were about so...), but would instead have supplied them to UK based converters for fitting of camping units etc. But who knows, I'm no expert and it's all speculation. They wouldn't have been the price we've been getting 2nd hand Grade 4 imports for though! One thing I'd hope they would have done is build them with anti-corrosion protection suitable for UK conditions
