we all have it and what happens ultimately is up to you the owner. So here are a few snapshots of rust..
1) A spot on the sill, don't leave it treat it ! Do it as soon as you see it rather than wait, the golden rule. Small spots creep fast.
2) Rear arches still solid and treated. They are not beautiful but are rust free and treated. 2 coats of POR15 on inside of lip then 3 layers of clear Waxoyl this year. I assess what they require each year.
3) 6 years treated POR15 still rust free - rear wing as it meets lower tail gate.
4) Bottom of windscreen supports - a newly found place of rust to check on Bongo's. Both sides will be POR15'd in the next week and that rust is gone for 6 years. (screwdriver surface bubbling off, sand it away, tissue away dust/rust/ POR15 x 2 coats then touch up, job done and forget it for 6 years)
Holes = bigger problems so sort it fast and you don't have to deal with holes/perforation.
POR15 is the only thing that is worth the name "anti rust treatment" in my view. The alternative is you cut it out or it just comes back. Even with the converter + Hammerite (basically just a top coat paint in my book) it's back in about 2-3 years.
All vehicles rust so it is nothing out of the ordinary for any old vehicle and not unique to 26 y.o. Bongo's by any means.

Re: Rust, the on going saga....
1.5 hours later, removed rust, coat 1 on the pillars (holes there would likely fail MOT), sill rust spot POR15'd and "Waxoyl clear" drench on the front crossmember to seal for winter. On the For Freda at least (not sure about Mazda version) under the bonnet the front grill has a huge gap 6cms between it and the aircon radiator so you can quite accurately pour Waxoyl down onto the crossmember and smeer it all over. The wide open front grill holes allow a great entry point for salty winter in water so it is a good idea to cover that with something water repellent.
Takes a short time and can save you thousands doing the same each year. Coat 2 at 2pm... topcoat when time to spare.
Easy, satisfying, saves a lot of money. There is nothing not to like.
