Ah right, process of elimination and all that. Cheers
Re: 2.0L misfire
Hello tight, it might be worthwhile checking the LT supply to the distributor making sure that the connection is secure and free from dirt/corrosion.
Re: 2.0L misfire
Haha! Cheers I'll take a look at the weekend

Re: 2.0L misfire
Hi Its still doing this erratically but quite a shudder when it does. Ive cleaned all the connectors around the distributor and even changed the leads again. It did when I had it ticking over with the n/side engine cover off the other day and there did appear to be some vibration noise towards the front of the engine very briefly. I dont tend to use the a/c often, and when I switched it on whilst ticking over it made the tickover worse. I did remove the pump at one stage many months back to to a misdiagnosed pulley bearing issue. I'm wondering whether to remove it again just to eliminate it. Oh and although plugs ok the exhaust tip is quite black, though it might have always been, there is an issue with the exhaust it whistles around 3500 revs but always has and has been on ramps but garage found no holes so something internal, but this hasnt worsened since I bought a year ago.Northern Bongolow wrote:any light on the dash when it happens. or does the exhaust sound a little noisy or does it make a vibrating noise on the nearside of the engine
Really want to be able to fix this at home, we've had some VERY big vets bills recently which has left us struggling, so arent able to just drop it off at the garage.

Re: 2.0L misfire
interesting about the pulley alignment and the aircon pulling down the revs, the engine should adjust the throttle a little when the aircon is activated so somethings not right there, put on top of that a bearing maybe seizing on the aircon tensioner or aircon pump itself then i suppose it cause a stall.
the 2ltr has a bit of a reputation for problems with the 1st pipe out of the exhaust manifold, it is a double skin exhaust and it rots out or get a split on the inner skin, you cannot see this from the outside but you may be able to hear it getting a bit loud or vibrating, ive seen 3 different ones that had the outer skin cut off then welded up on the inner then weld back on the outer skin.

Re: 2.0L misfire
mine was misfiring on tickover mainly, problem was oil leak from rocker box had broken down spark plug insulated connection, new gasket, set of ht leads, dis cap & rotor arm ffittsd, fine now
Re: 2.0L misfire
Ah the exhaust was welded according to the previous owner but theres nothing visible, this could be to do with the whistle around the 3.5k revs, i was going to replace mid and rear boxes first but not sure about that now. I havent disconnected the a/c yet but will do. Ive been running on premium fuel to see if that made any difference but it doesnt. Might try different plugs, the last were NGK BKR5E-11, any better than these?
Thankyou!
Thankyou!
Re: 2.0L misfire
You describe it as stutters, does it seem as though it is about to stall and then recover?
Does this only happen on idle?

Hi it does seem its going to stall when it happens around tickover. But does stutter at other times, usually below 2k revs. Sometimes its faultless, yesterday I was running around town quite a bit and after stopping at a shop for 20 mins, restarted and was really lumpy. Cant get my head around the way its inconsistent. New plugs due today but tbh think i'm clutching at straws there.
Re: 2.0L misfire
Sorry for delay in responding away at weekend and no internet connection on site.
I would check the idle speed control valve is not gummed up, or worse failing. Having said that I have no idea where it is or what type of valve it is on your motor. Others on here will know. You will need a can of carb cleaner and possibly a small bottle brush. I will get a look under the "bonnet" Thursday and locate it for you. Unless some others can come forward with the info and an image.

Hi all!
Well i fitted the new Denso plugs on Saturday and i really dont want to tempt fate but its been 100% good since then. Having said that im intrigued about the idle speed control valve. Also has anyone cleaned the plenum chamber and butterfly valve?

Gutted! Out and about today, still misfiring and spluttering. Thought I heard pinking when going uphill at one stage. As she got hotter the problem seemed to get worse and actually stalked at one point. Sat in traffic I knocked her into neutral which eased the lumpiness a bit. Just don't know what to check next.
