Before you start chucking money down the drain get it check out, this is quite a common fault with this sensor. If your cat is not overheating just disconnect the sensor.(that's the reason that they stopped fitting them ).

Most reassuring teenmal. Just what has been done to it. Catalyst checked and not overheating. Run up and down the A34 to test. Fault code cleared and has not come back, even though light was still on. Sensor disconnected to put light out. Second hand sensor for early one almost unobtainable as they were discontinued so fast. Mine is almost a prototype. Fantastic build quality but things do wear out. No misfire through the water. It just bounded through it happily, apart from the light. Been through much worse, we have fords and springs all around.

Update on the heat warning light problem. I have been running with the second heat sensor disconnected since January. The only effect seems to be a slight improvement in MPG.

The final test came yesterday when the beast went in for a MOT. It walked it, including the emissions. So it seems the only purpose of that sensor was to turn on and off the heat light. No wonder it got discontinued early on.
