Aircon packed up

Post by cavey » Mon Jun 09, 2014 2:55 pm

Up until this weekend, the aircon was working fine. But now it's stopped. Changing the temp to hot, it blows warm air, but just not cold when set to low. I'm guessing the gas has leaked, but it's strange that it just stopped all of a sudden, there didn't seem to be a gradual reduction in efficiency. I guess I should get it re-gassed with dye added to show up and leaks. Is thee a particular weak spot to look for? Thanks.

Have you checked that the air con belt is still there?

Good point, and do you hear/feel when the compressor kicks in? Also check the fuse (don't recall which it is, but I think it's under the bonnet).

A decent A/C specialist will drain the system, fill with nitrogen at about 200psi to check if it holds pressure ok. Had mine done lsat year and it passed that test but over about 3 months I lost all the pressure. I've removed the rear unit and it was the welded join that failed. Dropped the pipework off today for rewelding so hope to get it back tomorrow and then recharged at the weekend.

Where did you get yours done please Simon? I'm in Romsey, so not far from you and if you recommend somewhere local(ish) then that's worth a lot!

Highfield Garage in Salisbury http://www.highfieldgarage.com/ but wait until I've got mine booked in this weekend before you go nicking the last appointment :). He's a good chap and was able to work out the correct amount of gas to use after I'd disconnected the rear A/C unit. The cost is about £50 (or was last year) which is comparable to the likes of Halfords and Kwik Fit.

Ta, would rather go with an independent than use the monkeys at Kiwkfit or Halfords any day :D

Just got to sort the leaking ATF first (again  ), then the aircon is next, so don't worry, it won't be this weekend
