broken glow plug removal

Post by cookan » Thu May 01, 2014 11:50 am

Hi guys,
a while back when changing the glow plugs for the first time I realised one of them had been broken by the previous owner. I've been running happily on 3 but wanted to explore the options of getting it extracted. Thread Doctor in Surrey came very highly recommended but explained that because the threads on a bongo glow plug extend half way down the plug, they're more risky to extract and said there's a 50/50 chance of getting it out. Not wanting to risk a £1000 worth of work in getting the head off to fix a failed attempt I put it on the back burner but knowing there's something bust keeps playing in the back of my mind so I wondered if anyone had any experience of getting them removed, whether they were successful or not etc etc

From what I can see it's a matter of removing the glow plug head, drilling the thread out, then tapping the final section to pull out..I saw an amazing utube video of someone doing this in situ and blowing out any remnants with an air line and it looked no bother at all...but I guess if there's less below the thread then there's a greater likelihood of it freeing up whilst being worked on and dropping through before you get to it to tap (or it drops when you start trying to tap it)...

thanks,
Ant.

if your searching for a phrase its best to put it in the following maner, it finds the key individual words better during the search.

broken and glow and plugs.
