Flashing Glow Plug Light

Now I have sorted the flashing hold I have a flashing glow plug - darn thing!

When she is hot the light starts flashing, you know its going to start as you can hear the turbo whistle and there is not much power, then about 30 seconds later light starts flashing, leave her to cool down for a few hours and it clears.

2 questions - has anyone had this with the turbo whistle? when cold she is as good and lively as ever.

secondly, trying to read the code, what a mare I have a 2000 facelift and the plug is different from the documents available, anyone know what pins I should short? see pic of the socket below.

Plus, should the enginer be running or not when I read the code?

I'm guessing you have the later drive by wire system? There have been a few threads recently regarding power loss possibly being related to problems with the vacuum driven variable vane turbo, Here's one that springs to mind: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... le#p620591

The socket is the same - just that its mounted upside down, as they all are

But when I short the ones in the document I do not get any change in the flashing sequence? Should the engine be on? tried on and off?

Any help to get a code would be appreciated

The connector should be setup like this the Black wire shorting, and the Red wires via the bulb or LED (if you use an LED make sure you have it the right way around, if it doesn't light at all reverse the Red connections);

This is for the Engine Diagnostics Glow Plug flashes, not the transmission when the Hold light flashes.

Just to say, when I put the shorts in on the diag connector (Can't remember which ones off the top of my head), my 2001 diesel glowplug light then flashes out the sequence, not a lamp/LED on the connector. I think it's in a fact sheet somewhere.

Yup it does on the later models, but not the earlier ones so to play safe I have shown the bulb

My vehicle is at Discount Trucks at the moment, they are based near Newbury,

So far they have looked at the waste gate, and EGR valves
(The vehicle had 2 new EGR valves fitted in 2012,which is documented in the vans history)

Tomorrow, they are looking at the hoses and the EGR solenoids,

If they solve my problem, I will let you know....

My van is a 2000 V reg 2.5 diesel.

My light continually flashes all the time....as soon as I start the van, it flashes
all the time, until I turn the van off.

Thnaks G8 worked a charm and I got a code ... now the next weird bit, anyone seen this?

I got 8 digits
Long flash, 2 sec gap 0
Long flash, 2 sec gap 4
Long flash, 2 sec gap 0
Long flash, 2 sec gap 0
Long flash, 2 sec gap 1
Long flash, 2 sec gap 2
Long flash, 2 sec gap 2
Long flash, 2 sec gap 8

The codes are 4 digits so I thought maybe its 2 codes?

P0400 - shows as Exhaust Gas Recirculation
P1228 - comes back with nothing

Any ideas anyone please?

It is 2 codes,

P1228 = "Wastegate Failed To Open Under Pressure".

Same code as I have on mine.

Discount trucks seems to think, that the turbo might be the cause of the problem...?

Same codes as mine. Mine's only after a slog uphill. If I take it steady, it doesn't happen. Not got to the bottom of it yet....

Get my garage to take a look.

I have spoken to my mate, he thinks turbo actuator (whatever that is) so he is gonna take a look - when I get to the bottom of it I will let you know

He will probably mean the Waste Gate Actuator. Its a vacuum device that controls the Waste Gate Valve on the turbo to stop it from over Boost.

Interestingly, mine has now stopped flashing, just as I was about to get serious with chasing the fault. What have I done differently, you may ask? Well the only thing I can think of if basically giving it a bit of welly, and not driving to save fuel like I had previously been. The odd foot to the floor when accelerating up the motorway and generally driving more as I'd like to, rather than being tight! Interestingly there only seems to be a couple of mpg different. Maybe this has cleared some crud out of some crevice in the turbo, that has solved it. Or maybe it has moved some crud which is now blocking a leak in the vacuum system somewhere. Either way it's OK now, but the worry is, when is it gong to go wring again? At least though, it has never been a really issue. Just lost power for a bit, but then fine again.
