Temp sensor

Post by Kez » Thu Dec 05, 2013 7:08 am

Hi all,

I've got a couple of water temp sensors and wondered if one might fit my 2.5 WLT.

What is the thread size of the Bongo sensor, and is there any info on resistance versus temperature.

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Hi!

There are two water temperature sensors on the Bongo - one for the dash, another feeding the ECU for fan control. (parts 6 and 26 in engine bay offside view http://mazdabongo.wikispaces.com/Parts, respectively).

They are NTC thermistors - manual states 2.3-2.6kR @20degC and 0.29-0.34kR @80degC. I think this is for part 26, I assume part 6 will be the same. ?? There are test voltages for part 6 while in circuit - I forget, something like 6-8V.

There are part numbers on here for both, circuit diagrams for the dash sensor/gauge, and somewhere a voltage trace for part 6 against temperature.

I have a spare dash temp sender in the van, and thread pitch gauges, but can't find my Bongo keys at the moment.

A lot of folk fit aftermarket digital temp gauges (either hose clamped to the head stub where hose 10 attaches, or attached to one of the threaded holes on the back of the head.

Have you got a fault or just identifying spares?

Both really. I've fitted a analogue temp gauge to the original sensor and I think it's reading a bit fast, ie the reading is hotter than the actual temp. I have a sensor that came with the gauge, it doesn't fit.
What size is the top hose? I've got a 40mm sensor adapter. I'm waiting 'till I've got all the replacement parts then I'll drop the coolant, flush and refil/bleed the system. The thermostat is on order, the pink antifreeze is in my garage, I'm running our dehumidifier for a supply of clean water, now I'm looking at a new temp sensor. The OE ones are expensive so I'm looking at some off other vehicles that could the same spec. Before I drain down I'll check the hoses and pipes. If the steel pipes are dodgie I'll replace with copper, I've looked into using copper on vehicle cooling systems and decided it's ok plus I'm a plumber. Even with a temp reading of 110 degrees the top hose and rad are only warm and the bottom hose is cold so I reckon that's the thermostat permanently shut. The van never loses a drop of water so I'm not to worried just trying to get everything spot on. Thanks for your input, more of the same please.

Cheers

Seems to be 3/8" 28tpi, by my measurements. I thought everything on a Bongo was metric, so I could be wrong.
