Bongo Steering Rack Replacement

Post by wilnx005 » Thu Jul 25, 2013 9:36 pm

Hi, I just thought I’d share my experience with changing the steering rack today (1996 2.5 diesel – 4x4)

I must say I followed the fact sheet in the members area so thanks to Mark Blakeaway and the forum for supplying the info – it made the job much easier although it still took me 3 ½ hours. With three cuppa’s and a couple of phone calls!

Mine was leaking power steering fluid (see below) from just about every seal it could so it was well overdue for a replacement part. I know there are repair kits out there but I opted for a recon steering rack as (i) it has two years warranty and (ii) I haven’t got the time to replace the seals, particularly if replacing them doesn’t go to plan!

So here’s a bit of extra info I found from replacing the rack.
Bolt that attaches the rack to the steering column = 12mm
4 x bolts that hold the steering rack to the bongo = 14mm
The rear 14mm bolt (drivers side) that holds the rack to the bongo is extremely difficult to get to – I had the bongo on axel stands – So I had to remove the Intercooler via the three 10mm bolts and remove the air scoop for the intercooler via 3 10mm bolts. Once this was removed the rear bolt was much more accessible (please see picture below).

Hope this helps folks!
