Lower bed advice please ?

Post by Davebo » Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:27 am

Hi,
Just bought a Freda with a (Manchester Campers) mid conversion. So I have a rear bench set and a big gap.

I'm after recommendations for turning that into a double bed please ?

So far I've thought of collapsible frames (like Southern Bongos but hefty price tag) and large storage boxes with a home made pad on top. (Then camping mats across the lot).

Any advice / options please ?
Thanks, Dave.

I'm an enthusiast for the plastic crates option.

i currently use the 48 litre ones from Hobbycraft which have fairly strong lids although they obviously wouldn't support body weight all applied in one spot, climbing into the AFT, for instance.

These particular boxes have veritcal sides as they are not designed for storing inside each other. This gives marginally more internal volume and wastes less floor area. I have tried a number of boxes and these are the best so far. They also have fold down carrying handles at the ends.

Mine go three across, lengthwise at the moment because the van is unconverted with only one row of seats fitted. You might find that four in two pairs long sides across would be an option.

I camp with an awning tent so in the daytime some of the crates can go out in the tent to make space in the van.

We do something similar bridging the gap between the rear bench and the reversed middle bench.
Ive looked into getting an extension made but with no joy.

I've got some spare fold down bed legs available if any use to you. You could easily add a wooden base on top with suitable matress / cushions. I'll have to get the dimensions for you later:

Those bed legs look like they would do the job. If they're not already bagsied.
Thanks, Dave.
