Temperature gauge dead?

Hi guys,

Just bought our second bongo after a short period of using a caravan (yach...). Only problem is that the "super duper ninja Bongo" is actually a little bit less than super... So far I've had to patch two holes through what should be solid metal on the wheel arches, sort a hose leak and re-underseal a good chunk of the rear end...

HOWEVER, my main problem is that the temperature gauge is dead. I was told "Take the wire from the sender unit (under the drivers side seat) and short the wire, then you can see which is broken"... However, when I unplugged the lead, while the engine was running, and the fan kicked in immediately, which I was told shouldn't happen, and then shorted the wire leading to the gauge, which didn't move, which it should have...

What on earth do I do now!

did you remove the wrong switch lead, the temp switch is the one at the front right hand corner of the head at the drivers side,(single wire) it sounds like you removed the fan switch lead at the rear of the head at the drivers side,(double wire) when this is removed the front fans come on.

I have to agree with Ady.. Sounds like you were maybe testing the wrong sender..?

I maybe wrong with this? But 188-40C tells the ECU that controls the fans via relay. The ECU is a 5V circuit?
You really don't want to start connecting it up to anything it shouldn't...! New or even used ECU's ain't cheap!

It was the wrong temperature sensor... the one at the front made the dial drop down... Apparently it goes up a little bit once its been sat a while... Does that sound different?

it is damped, so takes a min to register. it runs in light oil to smooth out the peaks and troughs. clean it up and reconnect.

short that one to earth, the gauge should eventually read full, if not the sender may be shot.
