constant velocity joint change

Post by stevo » Sat May 19, 2012 4:22 pm

hi all bongo forum I need to change the nearside front
constant velocity joint on the bongo 2.5 turbo 1996
any hints tips and/or special observations on this one
would be appreciated I intend to remove the upright
leaving it still attached to the wishbone and would
like suggestions on locations for axle stands whilst
doing so also while having the nearside front wheel
lifted noticed with the rest of the wheels remaining
on the ground that the wheel is not free to be
turned and wonder whether any special regard has to
be given while loosening and final tightening the hub/
driveshaft nut , a torque figure for this nut in lbs/ft
would also be most useful only have an old school
britool torque wrench which continues to give good
service so will be using it to final tighten this nut ,ps
recently found( allens bongo hints and tips) and using
his suggestions fixed the fuel gauge in about 15
minutes

i would mark the flanges with pen or chalk first then remove the front prop at the flange, then jack all the front end up using the the cross member with the downward dimple in it, then put a GOOD pair of stands across the member. the rear on the ground will give you stability and brakes and in gear whilst allowing the front end to spin free.
check the little bearings in the top swivel of the strut, they go very dry up there and can seize.

happy crawling.
