i don't want to diss the rac or aa but in the pass they have been no help only towing to the garage, but the bloke this time was good he checked the oil and showed me could do with a top up but was not below min mark, checked and showed me the selecter arm was working, went on to tell me a bit about gearbox and engine all went over my head. i went do the internet to find a gearbox one garage up north said you can get it scanned without taking the gearbox out, so i found someone local to scan the gearbox, they said i had no gearbox oil due to a leak which they have fixed and put oil in but it would cost £1800 in fix and might as well scrap the bongo. since the reverce gear has gone she has been driven 700k, she still drives like a dream as long as you don't need to go backwards. so who do i belive.

you were told that the box could do with a top up but was not below the minimum mark?
They showed you that the selector arm was working....Did you go UNDER the Vehicle to see this ?
You got a Scan on the box and they told you it did not have any OIL in it DUE to a LEAK
You are asking who you should beleive............

If there is oil on the dipstick and it drvies fwd, then there certainly is oil in it. If it ran out of oil, it would not go forwards.

If the box is totally shot, you should be able to get a 2nd hand one for a lot less than £1800.

when i rac man showed me the gear selector arm he had the driver front seat up and showed me the selector arm thingy it was sort of between the two front seats but under the main body the rac man was under the van. the garage told me it had an oil leak. i belive the rac man but i know nothing about cars only i LOVE my bongo, so that why i'm on here talking to people who think there bongo's are more then a piece of metal. (and i have limited funds don't want to be ripped off)

not sure i have done the right thing i went and got a new bongo hated driving the hubby's volvo. thanks for the advice you all gave, i still have my other bongo so if Alacrity see please get in touch as i would still like his advice. number 2 bongo is been put though her paces hope she as good as number one. but i'm thinking of pimping her any ideas would be great x
