Post by eckerB » Fri Jun 03, 2011 1:11 pm

The central locking has suddenly stopped working, will it be the fob or a fuse blown??????
Where do I start to check for the fault. Thanks in advance. #-o

does it work if you pull/push the knob? if not then its usually the wiring between the door/body

Could be the battery in the fob, or could be the battery supplying the CL is low.

You didn't mention if the CL system was part of an alarm...!

Before you start pulling too much apart...!?

All the way round with the key...

Check that one!

Then.. Power supply to the remote receiver itself.. Could be one of those pesky glass fuses in the holder come lose/not making contact in the clips..? (I only prefer blades!)

Could the aerial on the receiver be bared off at the end & touching part of the bodywork/chassis? That will/could affect reception..?

Wires running from the receiver to the locking actuator.. (Normally two wires with bullet connectors.) With door slamming they can come uncoupled...?!!

I'm assuming it's an after market system??...
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

Tried the door knob to see if the CL worked and it didn`t.Tried the fob and it worked twice then nothing!I will start by getting the fob checked and go from there, thanks for the help guys.Regards Eric.
P.S. Don`t think it`s an aftermarket thing, also it`s not attached or anything to an alarm.

Almost certainly a break in the wiring by the drivers door, its just intermittent connections by the sound of it. The trouble is the insulation may not even be broken and you may have to feel for break in each wire along it length where its stressed by the bending and clip/tie.

Thanks again Geoff, next time the CL stops working I`ll get on it.Do you have an idea of the colour of the wire which is likely to be the culprit please or is it going to be hit and miss when looking for the break? Thanks in advance for everyones help.Eric.

Well there are three wires which handle the CL are Blue/Red (+12v), White/Black and Yellow/Red, but I would check each wire in the loom as you will be annoyed to find that the windows stop in a week or two's time! Run each wire between thumbnail and and first finger if you fill a "notch" then be suspicious the chances are some of the wires will have broken inside the insulation even if the insulation hasn't broken.
