Turning engine over/ Cutting out.

Post by alexandersupertramp » Sun Apr 24, 2011 12:57 pm

Hi out there in Bongoland, Hope someone can help diagnose my problem and suggest how to resolve it please?
We have a 2.5ltr 1996 2wd automatic.
I have been away in the bongo over the bank holiday (our first outing in anger, since we bought it) for 2 nights in north wales.
The problem occurred when we stopped for a toilet break after about 50 miles, when i went to turn the engine over it was like the battery was flat ( the battery is only 3 months old),I put on some revs and managed to get it going. Then when we came to the first junction the engine seemed to loose revs and stalled. I managed to get it started again and then no problems on the motorway for the rest of the journey untill we came to junctions again and we kept stalling out. I drove the rest of the way using the S2 gear and then changing up to Drive. All seemed well when we set off home this morning, then when i got home after 80 miles driving I went to start it up again and go down the shops the same problem occurred. I have now parked it up at home.

Thanks, Alexandersupertramp.

Hi you don't say if its Petrol V6 2.5Ltr or Diesel 2.5Ltr ? There are lots of causes, a search using Stalling gives some ideas and cures ranging from blocked Fuel Cap to leaking fuel pump seals; the bigger problem is identifying the specific problem normally try these search results for ideas;

Thanks for that g8dhe, I have just been out to the van and unscrewed the diesel cap. It appeared there was a lot of suction in there and a big release of presure, also fired up first time. Do you think that was the problem, I'm hoping so.

Many thanks,

Alex.

Well the Fuel Cap problem does have many takers! I think some have washed it in warm soapy water to get it going http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 25#p460325 again as its only a simple one way valve to let air in but not fumes out. However it does allow some vacuum to form so there is always some air intake when you release it I think.
