But seriously, mine used to go up a long way, and it didn't work that great either. Despite that, it passed its 1st MOT with no probs and I was advised that the old 6 click MOT limit was a thing of the past. Nonetheless, the get it working better, I went over it. Firstly, before thinking about adjusting the cable, you really should get hte adjusters on the brake drums shoes set properly - mine were well short of keeping the shoes close to the drum. Without that setting correct, I'm pretty sure the effecgiveness of the mechanical geometry is impacted on (if you get me - bascially, levers etc. are not working at best angles etc.). That will also make the handbrake lever come up less high. Next, resist the urge to adjust the cable at the handbrake shroud end and get under the vehicle on ramps for access (though you might dodge it by parking 2 wheels up on a good kerb) and adjust up cable slack from there.
I did all this but not worrying about getting the handrake lever operating a lot lower. The handbrake performance was transformed. Nonetheless, when it came for its 2nd MOT Mike at Wheelquick insisted on adjusting it up further (thank you Mike) so it did not come up very far, before it went for its MOT. Work that lot out!?!?!
