SRS Airbag light

On a recent trip down into France, the SRS light came on. went off after about an hour and then, on it came again. It is now permanently on indicating some kind of issue with the airbag. I looking for any experience of diagnosing faults - I've looked for the ususal things in respect of loose connections and can see no obvious issues. Short of removing the bulb, anybody got a route into this?

Its only going to become a problem at MOT time, covered here recently
