can't get the head off....
Good morning..
After one weekend, lots of beer, a BBQ and one nights work. I've nearly got the cylindr head off my bongo. Wanting to put in a new gasket and probably get the head pressure tested.
The stupid thing still won't come off.
Can someone please list what else I need to remove. I've read through the fact sheet in the members area but I'm obviously missing something.
The manifold is off, undone head bolts hidden under injectors.
Done bolts out side and inside of crank shaft.
Does the exhaust side need to come off (I've detached bits so that the exhaust side is not attached to anything else other than head).
But are there bolts underneath it?
Should the head come up easily once all the bolts are off?
I'm considering lifting it with a screw drive but don't want to damage the head (if its not already cracked).
Many thanks for any help
Jon

Did you try the suggestion of cranking the engine over (with bolts in place but slackened off enough so the joint could be cracked by the force of compressed air)?

Re: can't get the head off....
If you've removed injectors / glowplugs, then turning the engine over is unlikely to work as there will no compression. Presumably you have a set of new head bolts, so check you have removed the same qty. Finally, give it a gentle tap with rubber mallet whilst pulling the head from above. Due to the locating pegs & oil-feed pipe, you wont be able to move it any direction other than upwards.

Apologies - I assumed he did have our would have those in place (plugs yes, but why injectors?)Simon Jones wrote:If you've removed injectors / glowplugs, then turning the engine over is unlikely to work as there will no compression. Re: can't get the head off....
I don't think removing injectors is necessary. I did it on mine for three reasons:
1) They're done up tight, so easier to remove when the head is still attached to block
2) I was having it skimmed & pressure tested, so it needed to be quite well stripped down
3) Didn't want to risk getting any dirt in them as the jet is incredibly fine

Re: can't get the head off....
In the members area fact sheet it say to remove the injectors as there are head bolts hidden underneath them.
They come out diagonally from the head and cover up 4 of the bolts, on the drivers side, where the manifold is.
So had to remove them to get at the bolts. I guess with the right tool you might be able to undo the bolts simply with the manifold off, but its got to be better getting a proper well fitted socket on to undo them safely.
Gonna tackle it again when I get home this eve.

Re: can't get the head off....
Sorry, what I meant was how would removing the injectors stop teh cylinders from holding compressed air/mixture. Removed glowplugs I can undertand, but injectors?

Re: can't get the head off....
Because the injectors fire fuel into the indirect precombustion chamber, which is directly above the piston
Time for a bit of homework methinks Mike.....

Hi Have you taken out the two smaller sized head bolts at the front and the two bolts that hold the timing belt cover to the head. there is a dowel pin midway up exhaust side so it has to come up not backward.
Good luck and get it tested as mine had a crack that you cant see.

Re: can't get the head off....
Ok....after another attempt the thing is a tiny bit loose...Just cant get the exhaust side free....also it might be that someone has stuck the ruddy head down.
Can someone please advise/confirm on the following.
I'm trying to get the bolts on the underside of the exhaust manifold undone, (to take off 'B' the exhaust manifold).
So I think I need to get the turbo out the way, is this the big thing around 'A' and 'B'.
I've undone the gold ring around 'A', but it still wont budge....cause what ever 'B' is is still attached to the otherside or there's a seal I cant undo.
I could also try and undo 'C', but can get one of the bolts undone round the back of the pipe...any ideas? If I could get this off I could remove the manifold once its all up.
PLEASE SEE IMAGE HERE:

Sorry if I'm calling something the wrong name...bit tricky with minimal car knowledge and most guides only describe things in text.
Will definitely get it pressure tested once the heads off....

Hi I undone the two bolts holding downpipe to gearbox then the downpipe to turbo flange, three bolts. I couldnt undo the big bolt on the end of the manifold so I undid the two bolts inlet side egr unit. Once you have removed exhaust manifold bolts and water and oil feeds to turbo it will slide towards passenger door but dont loose the washer on the oil pipe on top of turbo and be careful as you slide it out. Also the airducts have to be removed nothing is easy Once the manifold turbo and downpipe are off you can see how they are connected.
If you PM me your e-mail address I can send you tightening sequence if you haven't got it. Brian

And SU carbs, and tappets you adjusted with a screwdriver and a spanner.
So my owners told me

Re: can't get the head off....
HEAD IS NOW OFF!!!! WOO!!!
only took one long BBQ fuelled weekend and an hour or 2 each night for 5 nights and a Saturday morning....
Now to make a list of what to buy to put it all back...
If anyone has a list from their own attempts that might also be handy...
Can't see any cracks, damage on the head gasket, so I suspect a proper cracked head is the problem.
Now do I get it pressure tested, or keep that £50 and get a new head anyway.
Other things to get:
Cylinder Head
New head bolts,
Cam Belt (Timing belt)
Exhaust Manifold Gasket
Head Gasket
Maybe a gasket for the other manifold (water manifold?).
Plus some new thin black piping as some of it was so solid I can't see it going back on without breaking.
Any other things?. Should I replace the Camshaft Oil Seal?
Cheers for advice
