What tyre valves?
I've just be informed by our local tyre man that my van needs a new valve on one of the back tyres (it's been deflating over the passed few week and a replacment tyre hasn't solved it).
My question is can I use the standard Bongo tyre valves, given that the wheels aren't the originals (they're 18" Zailer alloys)? Or will I have to find something else to fit the larger wheel size?

Yes there are (SFAIK) just "valves" except for very special bolt in ones for some racing wheels.teenmal wrote:Hi Bernie, just get your tyre man to replace the valve (like for like) they cost about 50p.bernie wrote:I've just be informed by our local tyre man that my van needs a new valve on one of the back tyres (it's been deflating over the passed few week and a replacment tyre hasn't solved it).

PS They may cost 50p, but it costs more that that to get them fitted.
Re: What tyre valves?
I did ask the tyre man if he could fit them but he said that because they were screw in metal ones he wouldn't do it and said I needed to speak to a wheel retailler (?)...I'm not sure what to do now

What on earth sort of wheels have you got fitted then?bernie wrote:I did ask the tyre man if he could fit them but he said that because they were screw in metal ones he wouldn't do it and said I needed to speak to a wheel retailler (?)...I'm not sure what to do now
Can you post a picture of one of the valves?
Are they like this?

If it's what I'm thinking of, I thought only very specialist wheels had that sort of valve.

If this is the type of valve (bolt on type)I dont understand why your tyre man cant fit them.
Cheers Malc..
Re: What tyre valves?
If your tyre fitter said that, then he might have meant that the hole (that accomodates the steel valve) in the wheel is smaller than a standard valve hole. I think replacement steel valves can be ordered through an alloy wheel outlet, but can take a while to track down.

Re: What tyre valves?
Most metal valves have the same diameter as ordinary rubber valves and can be replaced with rubber. We do this quite often as the rubber seals on metal valves dry out and leak. By the way I`m the manager of an ATS centre.

Re: What tyre valves?
Some advice from our local tyre centre: be wary of the screw in metal valves as there is a tendancy to corrode the alloy wheels. I think its some kind of electrolytic action which is occurs when two disimilar metals are in close proximity. Apparently, these valves were all the rage with boy racers a while back, but are much less common now. I did buy one for a non-wheel-related project & they cost £5 each.
