overheat while stationary, thermostat?

No idea really but from the compatible parts list at the head of this section you should ask for one of the following.

Thermostat, Bongo 2.5DT, MX-3, MX-6, Xedos, B2500, etc.

I hope I'm wrong here Nigel, but I would have thought that the only way you could get white smoke (steam) in the exhaust would be if water were getting into a combustion chamber, which would point to a head gasket or a cracked head. Or is it possible for the overflow to get sucked into the air inlet? Anyone?

Well re-bled the system, got temp up till bottom hose got hot, fierce steam coming from bleed hose so imposible to bleed, am now looking to get her into a bongo friendly garage, anyone know one in or around heathfield?

Another update, the garage phoned today, confirmed the head is cracked, also a sensor switch on the engine needs replacing, he tried to get the head from his usual supplier but they now only supply it complete with valves etc so now it looks like the total price for repair is around the £1500 mark i just wish id purchased the coolant loss alarm when i joined BF

Cost me that and more when mine went but have had no trouble since it was repaired

Ask the garage to check the face of the engine block before they rebuild it and put the new head on....also make sure they know exactly how to fill up and bleed the cooling system.

I wonder how much labour cost is saved by not having to transfer the valve gear etc (and re-grind?) from the old head to the new. Does this substantially offset the cost of a head with valves etc. already installed).

The suspicious bit of me also wonders if this is a line I would spin were I actually whipping the head off a breakers yard Bongo and plonking it on a different one, but I think I ought to say 10 Hail Marys and wash my mouth out with soap for thinking that one

I got the garage off BF recomended garage list, the guy said he owns a bongo himself. i did say about getting the replacement from the breakers but he advised against it.

But I would be interested to hear that those with direct or general technical knowledge on subjects like this have to say about labour saving costs in not having to transfer valve gear etc.

Good luck. It is a very unfortunate occurrence that will hopefully not recur once fixed.

Based on labour rates when I was in the trade, I suspect that there wouldn't be much difference. It can take a long time to swap all the parts over, especially grinding in the valves to match the new head. I think a complete new head is a good idea, but a different story if you can do the work yourself.
