MOT Fail :(

Failed on Emissions (slightly over) and headlight aim although he said he would of fixed these for me if it wasn't for the brake fluid leaking out from a valve behind the master cylinder. When I asked him about it he said he's never seen a braking system like it before. The Master cylinder is wet underneath and if you press the brake pedal and look at this valve (he hasyou can see it squeeze out a bit of brake fluid. I had noticed the reservoir had dropped recentyl but put it down to the front pads being low. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Advisory/Comments:
Slight Coolant leak around the front 'sort of where the front axle is'.
Slight play in steering.
Front brake pads low.
Slight oil leak from engine

See if you can get a Master cylinder repair/overhaul kit...failing that a replacement master cylinder.

This is the offending item. On the bottom photo where the arrow is pointing this is where brake fluid is leaking when the brake pedal is pressed.
According to lush projects it is a Dual Proportioning valve S10H43900A. The question is how do i fix it or where do I source a replacement? Any answers greatly appreciated, I have 7 days to get it fixed

Yep, i'll drive her hard in a low gear on the way back there on Monday.

I phoned a Mazda dealer and gave him the lush projects part number and he said 88 quid plus vat plus its gonna take over a week to arrive from Belgium...bugger.

I am taking it to a bongo friendly garage tomorrow and they say they might be able to resurrect the old one or source a new one faster.

All it does is restrict the amount of brake fluid to the back brakes to make sure more go to the front and prevent the rears locking as the weitgh transfers forward so there can't be much in there, i'd do it myself but I can't be bothered to bleed the system afterwards. I did this once on a car and vowed never to do it again...

well i've been let down and the chap says he won't fix it and ordering a new part will be as easy for him as it is for me throiugh mazda. I can only hope the the code on lush projects is correct for my car, my local mazda dealer does say this is for a dual prop valve but can't guarrantee it for my chassis number.

I am going to have one last crack and try and fix it myself before ordering this new part and hope that it fits.

I'm surprised there isn't a copper washer between the valve and the squarish bit the brake pipe screws into

That would probably stop the leak......................

true point about rapeseed oil
i took my beloved betty bongo for mot last year co2 emmisions reading 2.02 on the screen , been using rapeseed oil this year and emmisions at the mot were 0.48 the garage could not believe a diesel that low

After some weeks of being let down by my local Mazda dealer I got in touch with Ian Taylor who managed to source me a replacement in about a week. I decided to fit it myself, replace the front pads as well as a good dose of vege oil in the tank and she passed straight away. I did ask the MOT station to bleed/replace the brake fluid prior to the MOT because i have no idea how long the fluid has been in there.

I took the old valve apart to see what it looked like and i can see where it was seeping through, if anyone is curious I can photograph an exploded view of it.

Was the replacement a new or 2nd hand part? If new, it's nice to know these 'unusual' parts can be obtained.

Second hand and a bugger to get hold of because most places want to sell you the whole brake assembly including master cylinder. They are possible to obtain new from Mazda but after waiting for weeks for news of where it was i gave up on them.

So glad to know that even a small but niggly part was eventually forthcoming....I'm glad you managed to fix it.
What sort of play do you have in the steering?....mine has a little, and I'm in two minds as to whether to replace the whole shebang, or leave it, as it seems to be within what the handbook says....I just like faultless steering, though.

It's not much, in fact its a better than a lot of Bongo's I test drove. I had it retested at a different MOT station and they didn't even mention it. They did find something new to put on the advisory ticket which was a split/missing tracking arm cover.
