Not changing gear when cold

Post by ibme_uk » Mon Apr 14, 2008 10:20 am

Our bongo has developed a strange habit just wondering if anyone has experienced this?

When we set out in the morning the bongo will hold the gears until it’s about to red line, then it will change up and do the same again. I don’t normally rev this high so it will stay in a low gear for ages while I crawl up the road.

Is this related to it being cold? It’s only recently started to do this.

I had a similar problem with my auto space cruiser a while back, it was due to lack of fluid in the box, a quick top up and all was fine, worth a try at least. Happy motoring and good luck.

Try a "search" ibme - lots of info about it including oil changing and filter cleaning in the gearbox.

It is quite normal for a Bongo to hold on to third gear when first starting off from cold. They are designed to do this until the gearbox warms up. However, if it has just suddenly started to do this when it didn't do it in winter, it seems something else is going on. I would start where David suggested, but if this is not the problem, you may have to visit a transmission specialist.

It sounds like something is amiss, yes bongo's do "hold" onto 3rd a bit when cold, but not to the extreme of almost having to redline it to get an upshift!

Have you checked the usual? ATF fluid level/colour? etc.....

It's amazing what a difference changing the ATF makes. My gearchange seemed fine before I changed the fluid, but it's so much smoother now. :D :D
