There are simple checks you can perform without having to acquire equipment. From cold, run the engine with the rad cap off (the one on the rad itself not the expansion tank). Look for bubbles in the coolant and for white smoke coming out of the exhaust or collant droplets on the oil dipstick. Any would indicate a HG failure. To be certain a compression test is the next step.
