Thermostat

Hi, I have to replace my thermostat, can anyone let me into the secret of where it is?
Stupid question but I cant find the little Bu**er

On the diesel it is under the passenger seat engine cover. Follow the pipes and you should spot it, towards the forward end of the engine.

All this from memory so hope I'm not wrong

thats exactly where DreamwarriorUK told me it was yesterday after i asked him to point it out to me.

passenger side, under the bit where the bleed pipe connects to the head. he also said it was a bit of a pain to replce as you have to take quite a bit out to get at it from the top.

Yes my Bongo over heated after just traveling about a mile and a half, read all the bits and bobs on the clinic web site and I believe its the thermostat.

Yes a bit, when I stopped to check it out it was bubbling a lot. Could this be a gunked up radiator problem that i have read so much about?

Oh dear - more like exhaust gas in the coolant. Could very well be the head gasket leaking. Try the full coolant purge air routine first. Fingers crossed it is only trapped air.

I have just checked out the radiator and if you run your finger round the inside there is a brown film in there. This look expensive

That's just sludge that always builds up over time. What you need to look for is oil or discolouration in the coolant itself.

Coolant is crystal clear. Where can I get hold of a pump with a bar meter on to test system, anyone know?

There are simple checks you can perform without having to acquire equipment. From cold, run the engine with the rad cap off (the one on the rad itself not the expansion tank). Look for bubbles in the coolant and for white smoke coming out of the exhaust or collant droplets on the oil dipstick. Any would indicate a HG failure. To be certain a compression test is the next step.
